Lee Shook left a DSS senior nutrition lunch program Monday in Hickory and headed home the only way he could: by bus.
"I couldn't get anywhere without them," he said just before boarding the Greenway Transportation bus.
Greenway provides free transportation for some seniors and medicaid patients and others so they can visit doctors, do their shopping, and attend the hot lunch programs, too.
"For many it is their only chance to get out," said Executive Director Suzette Bradshaw. The company works with DSS to provide the transportation services in Catawba, Burke, Alexander and Caldwell Counties.
It also runs a public bus system in Hickory with stops at Union Square, the Mall and elsewhere.
Fare paying customers on that system, though, do not provide enough funds to run the whole system.
The system operates with a combination of funds from local governments, the state, and grants from Washington.
