Are your kids vaccinated in time for school?

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- It's a milestone in Karina Hernandez's life.

"He's starting school for the very first time," said Karina.

Her 4-year-old son Sebastian will soon start school.

They're excited about the first day of class and a little concerned.

"Just for him to stay healthy and not to catch anything."

So Sebastian is getting vaccinated at the Mecklenburg Health Department.

Hernandez wants her son protected and it's also the law.

In North Carolina, students need required shots like measles, mumps and rubella to go enroll in school.

"Principals will be checking and if children don't get them by the required date they will be excluded from school attendance," said Dr. Stephen Keener the Medical director Mecklenburg Health Department.

For the past decade, there' s been a growing fear of a suspected vaccine-autism link.

You can make Fran's nachos!

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Fran Scibelli, of Fran's Filling Station fame, visited WBTV today at noon.  Loaded down with all kinds of goodies from the farmer's market, she showed us how to make a healthier version of nachos.  The secret ingredient is soy chorizo, a vegetarian product offering that classic chorizo taste.  (You can find soy chorizo at Trader Joe's.)  Unless someone told you, you'd never know these nachos were meatless.

Even though Fran fried her own tortilla chips, you can use your favorite brand right out of the bag and get great results.  Generously layer on sharp Cheddar, then top with cooked soy chorizo.  Bake for two minutes at 425 degrees, or until the cheese melts.  Make sure you use an oven-safe serving dish.

Once out of the oven, top with black beans, corn and guacamole.  Garnish with your choice of sliced black olives, pico, peppers, jalapenos, cilantro and sour cream.

Red Cross ready to celebrate World Blood Donor Day June 14

Red Cross ready to celebrate World Blood Donor Day June 14

With no substitute for human blood, those in need rely on the kindness of volunteer donors. To raise awareness and inspire action about this cause, Nexcare Bandages, in partnership with the Red Cross and supermodel Niki Taylor, announce the fourth annual Nexcare give program.

This nationwide initiative shines a light on the World Health Organization’s World Blood Donor Day on June 14 by thanking those who give blood and encouraging others to get involved.

Taylor, a longtime supporter of the Red Cross, became committed to raising awareness about blood donation after her own experience as a patient in need in 2001. Taylor received 100 units of life-saving blood after a near-fatal car accident, and attributes her survival to the donors and doctors who helped save her life.
