Charity Beneficiaries - Three Charlotte area charities have been selected as the beneficiaries of Charlotte Wine & Food Weekend 2013-2014 season of fundraising. The following organizations were selected for the vital services they provide in nourishing the mind, body and spirit of our community’s children by protecting and saving lives. The beneficiaries and designated programs for 2013 and 2014 are:
Council for Children’s Rights – Services for Abused and Neglected Children. Funds would be used for salaries for five children’s advocates (including attorneys) in the Individual Advocacy and Child Welfare Team and the Children’s Intermediary Program. Services include finding appropriate home placements, securing necessary medical and mental health treatment for children, developing individual educational plans and securing plans for children who turn 18. CFCR is the only agency in Mecklenburg County providing legal representation and holistic advocacy for children.
Pat’s Place Family Advocacy Program – Pat’s Place serves Mecklenburg County children from birth through age 18 who are affected by sexual abuse. Child sexual abuse crosses all socio-economic groups and can happen to any family in any neighborhood. The average age of the children it serves is 8 years old and it currently service 335 children per year. Charlotte Wine & Food Weekend would partially fund social worker salaries for the Family Advocacy program for two years. This program helps to reduce trauma and improves outcomes for the child and non-offending family members associated with a child abuse investigation. Pat’s Place has two Master Level Family Advocates and also offers after hours emergency response teams for families in critical need. The Family Advocates provide crisis intervention, education and support at all stages of investigation and prosecution; assist in procuring services such as mental health treatment, protective orders, domestic violence intervention and provide court meeting support and accompaniment.
Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina Backpack Project for Kids - Serving 14 counties in North and South Carolina with its innovative Backpack for Kids Project, Second Harvest provides underprivileged children with nutritious food over weekends. Funds raised during Charlotte Wine & Food Weekend will be used to provide hundreds of backpacks with food to children in need for a school year. Backpacks are loaded on Friday afternoons with some of the following foods: canned fruit, canned vegetables, beef stew, canned soup, canned tuna or chicken, breakfast bars, cereal, paste and peanut butter. Children bring the empty backpacks to school on Monday. Teachers report that backpack food is often the only food in the home for the child during the weekend and that they are noticing a significant difference in behavior and attentiveness on Monday for children once they begin the program.
“The three charities were selected by our board based on the critical services they provide to Charlotte children that are in need of education, protection, food and shelter. We value their role in our community and want to recognize them for their ongoing services and endless contributions,” said Doug Cohen, Board Chairman of Charlotte Wine & Food Weekend.
